“Ara? I didn’t know there was another kid in the party...” A girl was currently looking down at a boy who had both his arms behind his head as some sort of pillow. It was already past two in the afternoon and they were currently under a Cherry Blossom tree on top of a hill overlooking the area.
Said boy looked up then immediately closed his eyes after. “Hmph.” I don’t have the time to entertain another girl. This has been what? The umpteenth time I was forced to attend a stupid gathering so that my parents could choose a suitable bride for me when I grow up. Tch... Why are they hurrying anyway? It’s not as if the world’s end is going to be the next day. Sheesh...
While the boy was having a rant in his head, said girl decided to sit beside the lying boy. So he must be the boy Okaasan mentioned. Tatsuko Kazuki...He seems nice, I think.
A few minutes passed and neither one of them spoke. Kazuki, thinking that the girl he saw earlier had already left, decided to open his eyes and sit up.
“Had a good nap?” He heard someone say from beside him. When he turned to look, amber met hazel. He found himself looking at the same girl who he saw just a while ago. He didn’t know that he was donning a confused expression that made the girl in front of him giggle. Her giggling was what snapped him out of his trance. What’s up with this girl? Why hadn’t she left?
As if she heard what he just thought, she said, “I was waiting for you to wake up so we could talk a bit.” He hadn’t expected her to answer or even say anything for that matter so he wasn’t able to come up with something to say. The girl, tilting her head to one side, noticed that he wasn’t gonna speak so she decided to continue. “It’s boring down there... I’ve already spoken to the other kids who attended but most of them ended up injured because of my younger sister.”
Tatsuko still wasn’t answering nor speaking. And I’m supposed to listen to her complaints? What am I a diar wait – scratch that – a journal?
The girl seemed oblivious to the thought though as she continued to tell him of what she thought about the party going on below. She continued talking, annoying the heck out of him. What he doesn’t know is that the girl was doing it on purpose.
“...so as I was saying –“
“Enough! I’ve had it with your complaints. Could you please stop talking just for a minute or even a second? Why do you think I went up here?” The girl was about to answer but he beat her to it. “It was to get away from the party of course! Here I am minding my own business in peace and quiet when suddenly you show up and I unfortunately had to kiss that silence goodbye... So if your purpose of going up here in the first place was to annoy me, well then congratulations on a job well done.” He had his arms crossed by this time and was waiting for the girl to respond.
He wasn’t expecting what happened next. The girl wasn’t giggling like earlier, no, she was laughing. She was laughing at him. “Oi, what’s so funny?” He asked.
“You...” He could feel a vein popping at that moment.
“Pray do tell why...”
She somehow managed to stop and answer him properly this time. “I was told that the girls have a hard time making you talk and yet here I am talking to you. Your responses aren’t your usual one-liners too.”
He was surprised when he realized that what she said was true. Usually when the other girls try to strike a conversation with him, they either get scared or get shy around him that most of those supposed conversations ended up in total silence. This time, however, he spoke more than one word... more than one sentence even.
“You mean...”
She smiled. “Yup... I was only doing that to annoy the heck out of you, Kazuki-san.”
“Wait, how’d you know my name?”
She shook her head. “Doesn’t matter... What matters is that I can finally have a decent conversation with you.” She held out her hand to him. “Let’s start over okay? My name’s Natsuko Mikazuki. What’s yours?”
Tatsuko looked at the hand she held out then at her smiling face. They shook hands and he responded, “Tatsuko Kazuki... Nice to meet you, uh... Mikazuki-san.”
“I think we should drop the formalities, don’t you?” He nodded. “Great! So that means I get to call you Tatsuko. Is that all right?”
He couldn’t help but smirk. He hadn’t anticipated everything that had transpired a while ago but he had to admit that he didn’t not like it. In fact, he was already looking forward to when he will be meeting Natsuko again. “Yeah... I’ll call you, Natsu-chan then.”
“Eh? Why?”
He shrugged. “Just felt like it.”
“Do you honestly think I’m letting you get away with it?”
This time, he smiled. “Of course... Natsu-chan.”
Natsuko sighed. Oh well... “Keep in mind though, you’re the only one that I’ll allow to call me by that name.”
“Oh, well then I’m honoured.” Both looked at each other before laughing. After that, both spent the time together talking anything under the sun until they were called to go back to the party later that evening.

“Tatsu? Where are you?”
“I’m over here, Natsuko...”
“What are you doing here in the study room?” It was then when she noticed that Tatsuko was holding an album. “Reminiscing, Tatsuko?” She was now standing beside Tatsuko.
“Very funny...”
She smiled as she looked at the page Tatsuko was looking at as well. “Hey, that’s us when we were only nine. Never thought I’d see how we looked like then again.” She looked up at Tatsuko. “Hey, remember when you told me that you hated going to parties ‘round that time?” Tatsuko nodded. “That it was the excuse your parents use so they could pick your future bride...”
He smiled. “Yeah... And look at where we are right now.” He leaned down and gave Natsuko a chaste kiss on the lips, making the latter blush. “That party happened to be the best one I’ve ever attended... Natsu-chan.” He said chuckling.
“Mou...” Natsuko pouted.
“Still... It was also ‘round that time when we found out that we were already betrothed to each other.”
Natsuko nodded. “It was an added bonus...” She smiled.
Tatsuko closed the album and placed it on a nearby table. He then wrapped his arms around Natsuko’s waist and pulled her closer to him. “It was, wasn’t it... Just remember that I’ll always protect you, not only as a guardian of the Shingetsu no Miko but also as your betrothed.”
Natsuko wound her arms around his neck. “I know...” She then pulled him down for a kiss.
