Introduction:

Greeting fellow AE members,

Though I am still new as a RPG Mod, I'll do what I can do meet up with all your expectations. Though I can't please everybody, still I'd try to do so, okies?

Anyway, I would first explain what is the use of this thread RPG 101. This would be my current project (and still on going) project, my first project for this site's RPG community. This thread will contain anything and everything about RP (Role-playing) as well as the new and improved Role-playing storyline / background / plot that I'm working on right now. I hope that you guys could bear with me as I make my progress, slowly but surely.

Well, I guess that's it... and off to RPG Mod Work I go...

GENERAL RPG 101

What is role-playing?

This site's RPG is basically a variation of an online text-based role-playing game. This is a niche area of the online role-playing community, which caters to both gamers and creative writers. This site's role-playing setting (background) is a combination of non-game fiction (original setting) as well as mirror image setting (the use of another form of media, in this situation anime and manga, as a means of recreating a different dimensionality. This activity is closely related to both interactive fiction and collaborative writing

How to Role-play

When you have thought about who your character is, and what their personality is like, try to put yourself in their shoes. Imagine them in a situation, and write how they would react to the situation. In time, you might get other people replying to your role-play story, and thus other characters will interact with your own character. It is usually considered better to write more than one or two lines of role-play each time you post. Try to describe your scenery, your character's expressions, perhaps their feelings too.

Tips to improve your role-playing

1. Think about the post you are going to create. Is it a romantic storyline? A humorous one? Dark and sadistic? Or maybe a combination of this and that, the possibilities are endless.

2. Once you have done that open your word document (never type your post in the forum, always outside to keep from losing it because of one reason or another) and type away. This way you will have the aid of the spell and grammar checker to aid you, and it's much easier to come up with more and more ideas by doing this.

3. You may want to listen to a list of music / songs that mirrors the mood of you post, though this is not always a must have. I myself do not do such thing since it lags our computer (*grumbles*).

4. While typing, you should add emotions or thoughts to your character like why are they doing what they are doing, why are they there, what is going on in their minds, again, the possibilities are endless.

5. You may use the Thesaurus to find new words to use instead of the common ones, just don't over do with all those mumba-jumbas ok?

6. Trying typing about how your character moves, how his eyes darted from one place to another, the moisture of his lips, anything that seems relevant in predicting what the mood might be.

7. Now once your finished, re-read it and make other necessary corrections. Then post it.

8. Oh yeah, you might encounter something annoying (especially for those who are using the BBCodes for the ext colors, the quotation marks in the Word Document may not be supported or recognized by the site, thus creating a few errors such as mis-colored (pun intended) texts and such, so better keep a notepad handy by copying the type document and pasting it in the notepad, then copying it this time from the notepad and finally posting it.

Please take note that these tips are a compilation taken and or observed from various role-playing in the Internet, mostly catering those living in well-off continents such as America, Europe and Australia.

I do not gain any copy right for these tips, since I myself did not made the so-called tips. I merely observed and relayed these to this site, the Anime Elites Forum Board under the RPG category.

Miroku's guide to longer and better posts

Introduction:

Your eyes water as you stare at your screen, your nails bleeding from the biting, your head ringing from all that thinking... and finally, you've done it! A way to react to the attack from the black and gold dragon that just intended to bite you, in the rain! You lay back in the chair and read it aloud to yourself.

He jumps out of the way. He rolls into a dodge and then takes out a scroll. He begins to chant. It looks at him. He runs to a farther distance and calls to his friend.
"I need some help! Hit him with your sword!"

You smirk at the perfection of your post until you realize a crucial thing; it's short. Very short. Slumping back, you have rolled over to the guides section in hope of finding a guide to writing a longer, better post.
Enter me. Welcome to my guide.

Chapter one: Using The Landscape

Let's face it; nothing is able to happen nowhere. Basically, consider your surroundings when posting. Some of the more important parts of this are weather, terrain, and other people around you. If you had written the 'post' above, you would read it and see that there is no mention of any landscape related things, except for a mention of a friend who you called to. Let's start elongating.

The weather, as afore stated, is rainy. That one word can force flowing sentences, if you want to try hard enough. It's always nice to give a sense of weather before anything else, so let's re-write the first sentence of the post.
-The patter of rain hit him as he rolled out of the way into a puddle.
Better, certainly... but not good. Let's try again, adding increased description to the mix.
-The patter of half-frozen rain hit him as he rolled out of the way, into the chilled puddle.
Better still! But... not quite. Now, to turn that one word... rain... into a sentence of it's own that you can combine with the original sentence. Remember, 'rain' is many things, and you can use them all in here. Go all out.
-The patter of half-frozen rain, as well as the crash of deafening thunder, could only support the dark and looming clouds that hung over him. The freezing bolts shattered on his back until he was soaked through, but he found the energy to avoid it and roll out of the way, into a chilled puddle.

Now that's good. Next, the terrain. Rocky? Smooth? Well, if it's raining, what do you think it would be like?
-Runny
-Hard
-Moving
-1 and 3
The last one is the correct one. The terrain is runny and moving, with things being washed away. Now, let's add that into the post as well.
-The patter of half-frozen rain, as well as the crash of deafening thunder, could only support the dark and looming clouds that hung over him. The freezing bolts shattered on his back until he was soaked through, but he found the energy to avoid it and roll out of the way onto the moving, slithering ground, right into a chilled puddle. The water splashed in all directions, and then rolled off into the distance.
Okay! Now, the last part; acknowledge the people around you, as well as yourself, by name. Thanks to Elnaith and Arkamir for their names.
-The patter of half-frozen rain, as well as the crash of deafening thunder, could only support the dark and looming clouds that hung over Arkamir. The freezing bolts shattered on his back until he was soaked through, but he found the energy to avoid the dragon's fierce bite and roll out of the way onto the moving, slithering ground, right into a chilled puddle. The water splashed in all directions, and then rolled off into the distance, coming to a halt as it hit against Elnaith's feet.

Now that's a good first sentence, hm?

Chapter two: Poetic Item/action/other Description

You have to be careful with this... done wrong, it can be infinitely annoying. Done right, though, it can make you ARP (I'm not ARP, but then again, not all of my posts are as good as the example.) Now, let's work on the second sentence, and then we'll see what we have.
- He rolls into a dodge and then takes out a scroll.
Sounds bland, huh? Now, since we covered the dodge already, we can move onto the taking out of the scroll. Add detailing.
-Slowly. Arkamir reached into his pocket, careful not to the alert the dragon of his action. He recoiled his hand with the utmost care and, as it exited the flap of leather, it was seen to be holding a scroll.
Sound good? Okay, onto the description. Here, consider a few things; material, details, and feel. For instance, steel is sometimes referred to as cold, so if you are grasping a sword in the winter, it will be very, very cold. Now, to continue...
-Slowly. Arkamir reached into his pocket, careful not the alert the dragon of his action. He recoiled his hand with the utmost care and, as it exited the flap of leather, it was seen to be holding a soaked parchment. He opened it in a way that it did not tear, for this was a fragile thing, it seemed. Water had permeated every pore, and yet the ink was untouched by the hydration. It glowed with magical blue energy, and Arkamir moved his hand along one side. It was cool, like a spring shower, not frozen cold, as was the landscape. He took a breath, taking in a little water, and started to chant.
Note, now, that the chant is to be treated as an item. Describe it as you would anything else.
-The chant was soft, and sounded like a low gong, spreading over the distance as it bellowed outward. The scroll glowed at the touched voice; it was as if angels had parted the skies, and the opening had fallen on only the scroll. It shone like the sun.

Okay, recap. Here's our post as of now.

The patter of half-frozen rain, as well as the crash of deafening thunder, could only support the dark and looming clouds that hung over Arkamir. The freezing bolts shattered on his back until he was soaked through, but he found the energy to avoid the dragon's fierce bite and roll out of the way onto the moving, slithering ground, right into a chilled puddle. The water splashed in all directions, and then rolled off into the distance, coming to a halt as it hit against Elnaith's feet.Slowly. It was cool, like a spring shower, not frozen cold as was the landscape. He took a breath, taking in a little water, and started to chant. The chant was soft, and sounded like a low gong, spreading over the distance as it bellowed outward. The scroll glowed at the touched voice; it was as if angels had parted the skies, and the opening had fallen on only the scroll. It shone like the sun.

Niiiiiiiice. Note that a LITTLE description is NOT TOLERABLE. It's gotta be big or bust in RP's like these. Finally, we can get to the next chapter!

Chapter three: Thoughts, miscellaneous actions and feelings
Finally, the bulk of the extensions! This step is basically all you. Nothing I put will apply to your character, I promise. Thus, be careful that what you put is, in fact, your characters feelings.
Let's start with character info. Arkamir is a sixteen-year-old sorcerer-warrior cross class. This means he is determined, but controlled, in everything he does. His thought are probably a little lewd, and, though he is definitely not married, for the sake of the guide, he has a crush back home. Unlike the other parts of this equation, these all need to be scattered. Here's what I mean.

The patter of half-frozen rain, as well as the crash of deafening thunder, could only support the dark and looming clouds that hung over Arkamir. The freezing bolts shattered on his back until he was soaked through, and he could barely breath for the lack of pure air, as the mist infiltrated his delicate young lungs like acid. He struggled, and he found the energy to avoid the dragon's fierce bite and roll out of the way onto the moving, slithering ground below him, right into a chilled puddle. The shock of the cold hit him, forcing the acidic air from his chest in a quick whoosh. The water splashed in all directions, and then rolled off into the distance, coming to a halt as it hit against Elnaith's feet. Arkamir grabbed his chest and quickly pounded inward in a desperate attempt to resurrect him. Dammit! No! Not now, not like this! Not with Amanda waiting for me in Krien...> He thought. A tear welled up in his eyes. Amanda, sweet Amanda, whose cherry lips he had so tenderly kissed not a week ago. He could not let her down. He could not let himself die. Slowly, Arkamir regained his breath, and reached into his pocket, careful not the alert the dragon of his action. Feeling around, he grasped something he recognized, and then, with a slight smirk, he closed his eyes. He recoiled his hand with the utmost care and, as it exited the flap of leather, it was seen to be holding a soaked parchment. The ver-jacket slapped against his side, causing a hard sting as he let it fall. It was nothing compared to the broken rib he had sustained earlier in the battle. He opened the scroll in a way that it did not tear, for this was a fragile thing, it seemed. Water had permeated every pore, and yet the ink was untouched by the hydration... something Arkamir was quite glad of. It glowed with magical blue energy, and Arkamir moved his hand along one side. It was cool, like a spring shower, not frozen cold, as was the landscape. It reminded him of Amanda's lips. He took a breath, taking in a little water as he did, and started to chant. The chant was soft, and sounded like a low gong, spreading over the distance as it bellowed outward. The scroll glowed at the touched voice; it was as if angels had parted the skies, and the opening had fallen on only the scroll. It shone like the sun. After the chant was done and the scroll had been activated fully, a burning flame, now, in Arkamir's hands, he called to Elnaith. "Elnaith! Friend, brother, make haste! The beast is confused by the burning light of destiny! Now is your time! Smite him! Smite him, Elnaith, not a second later, smite him, dammit!" His gasps were audible, his limbs shaking from the excursion of the spell.

Lookin' good! And that's how to make something barely worth reading into something you want to read over, just to capture it's beauty!

Chapter four: Tips

Tip 1. To get better at describing things, pick a random object and describe it. Open a text document and start. To not stop typing the description until the entire page is full. Feel free to use prose or to relate the object to memories you have.

Tip 2. Developing a good character description is the key to good posts. If you know everything about your character, you can utilize this information to increase the length of your posts.

Tip 3. Practice makes perfect, so don't give up because your post is a little short. Most RP's will accept four or five line posts.

Tip 4. Bigger is NOT always better. Sometimes, four lines of incredible writing are worth eight of useless rambling.

Other Must Knows (mostly applicable only in this site)

Terminologies

GENERAL:

OOC (Out Of Character) - You talk / act as your real self, not the character you are playing as

IC (In Character) - You talk / Act as your character

RP (Role-play) - short for Role-play; the act of role-playing

RP (Role-player) - The one who is playing the game. In other sites they refer it as
"mun", a pun intended for human wherein they omitted the "hu" and changed the "a" in "man" to "u" creating "mun". This is but a variation.

PCs (Player Characters) - A character that a certain member is controlling.

NPCs (Non-Player Character) - A character that is not being controlled by the player. It can be random people (example: random students in Gakuen Academy) or specific people with certain jobs etc.

OPEN - means anybody can join in. This is usually seen at the end of the thread's topic / title. (Example: "The Birth of Alice (OPEN)"). It also means that the starter of the said thread is encouraging others, even those who have never interacted with his character to come and join in.

INVITES - you need the invitation of the thread starter to join in. This is usually seen at the end of the thread's topic / title. (Example: "The Birth of Alice (INVITES)"). Please do take note that even if you asked for permission to join (to the thread starter) he or she may also discourage you to do so, since it may be something, which he or she wishes to RP privately with others.

Power Playing - An instance or event in which a character is being portrayed as too powerful for anybody to beat. Other than that he or she is typing / role-playing the actions of the other PCs. (example: Alice suddenly grabbed the Queen of Heart’s crown with any second thoughts, as soon as she had done so, the queen cried out an ugly roar of defeat. – Please take note that this example may be a form of power playing if the Queen of Heart is a PC controlled by a player other than the one controlling Alice.)

EXCLUSIVE TO THIS SITE:

Free-form Role-play - A free-form role-play is a role-play where it is usually started without any set plot. Generally, it's more relaxed and easier for players to join at any time. An example would be the variety of MTs discussed below.

MT (Mass Thread) - a thread in which there is no clear storyline (or rather there really isn't any at all) and is most specially a specific place. There are three categories of Mass Thread mainly Public, Semi-Private and Private. Please take note that an MT should be a "specific place"

Pub MT (Public Mass Thread) - a thread in which no member would benefit what so ever. This thread is open for members to use. (example: thread title: "Pub: Gakuen Academy"). Please take note that only admin/s and the RPG moderator/s can make this kind of thread (from this day onwards).

SPriv MT (Semi-Private Mass Thread) - a thread in which is usually portrayed to as a shop or store where the public could enter as long as they have their business in it.

Priv MT (Private Mass Thread) - a thread in which it is usually portrayed to as a privately owned property. Since it is not really opened to the public and only a handful of people (characters are allowed to post in it depending on the owner. The owner of the said thread can also role-play by himself / herself as long as it is within the location of his / her property. (example: thread title: "Priv: Ashenvale Manor").

Please go to PC Property Registration for more information about creating a MT.

RPG Board: Anime Elites Community - Rules and Guidelines

RPG Board: Freeform Role-play - Rules and Guidelines

(Taken from kiranee's post)

What is CANON RP?
- This can be used if you want to STICK to the manga or anime.
- It is a lot harder though than Original since you need to know what really goes on in the anime or manga.

What is Free-form Role-play?
- A freeform roleplay is a role-play where it is usually started without any set plot.
- Generally, it's more relaxed and easier for players to join at any time.

What is Canon Free-form Role Playing?
- An anime-based role-playing that is started without any set plot.

We combined this two to make it easier for the members to start and this is fun than the known Canon RP.

Here are some of the questions that may be bothering you...

How do I join a RPG?
First thing to do is to read the RPG Rules, then create a Canon Free-form Role Playing plot.

Guidelines:
1. The CF RP request must be posted here. One request per topic.
2. The Title of the topic must be labeled "Title of your Story."
3. Follow this format:
QUOTE
a. History or the Story
b. Character Sheet/s
c. Set of Rules (Optional)

4. Your application will then be reviewed by the Admins and Critics.
5. A notice of approval will also be posted here.
6. When your RP has been approved, you can start recruiting more members to play the the needed characters for the role play.
7. When said characters are complete, you can now make a new topic at Anime Role Playing to begin your Role Playing.

How to role-play?
Basically, the flow style of Canon Free-form Role Playing is that the first person will introduce the world, history and storyline. They may or may not include their own character.

The next person who responds would probably introduce their characters and possibly interact with the first as well as expanding on the world and storyline. The general idea is the story unfolds as each person posts and the control is more in the hands of the individual characters as opposed to a GM (Game Master).

Please take note that all RPG Rules are applied even in the CANON Freeform Roleplay board.Another note is that this type of roleplay does not appeal to me, therefore I did not bothered revising this for now. Please refer to the provided link above to go to the original creator / starter of this portion of RPG 101...
